How draws work

What every draw record shows

Each winner gets a permanent record with every input to the draw.

  • We only publish a first name, last initial, and state, and only with the winner's permission.
  • The entry-list fingerprint is posted before the random number exists, so the list can't be changed to pick a winner.
  • If a winner doesn't respond in time, the backup draw gets its own record.

Check a draw yourself

  1. Get the random number. Look up the drand round listed on the record atdrand.love. It's public and can't be changed.
  2. Combine it with the fingerprint. Join the drand randomness and the entry-list fingerprint, then take the SHA-256 hash.
  3. Find the winning entry. Treat that hash as a number and divide by the number of entries. The remainder, plus one, is the winning entry's position in the sorted list.
