Community giveaway
Community Fund ledger
Half of our qualifying revenue goes into the Community Fund, and every dollar in the fund goes to prizes and getting them to winners. This is where you can check.
Our three rules
- Exactly 50% of qualifying revenue is allocated to the fund every month.
- Unspent money carries forward. It never comes back to us.
- Every quarter, spending must catch up with allocation, or we add prizes the next month.
Monthly statements
Each statement shows the estimate, the true-up when payments arrive, spending by category, and what carries forward.
| Month | Allocated | Prizes | Tax and shipping | Our contributions | Carried forward |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| No statements yet.The ledger opens with the first entry period, and the first statement publishes after that month closes. | |||||
What the fund pays for
Charged to the fund
- The prize itself
- Sales tax on the prize
- Shipping, packaging, and shipping insurance
Never charged to the fund
- Staff time
- Software, hosting, and data costs
- Anything else it takes to run the site (that all comes from our half)
Where we can, prizes ship directly from the retailer to the winner, and the receipt becomes the ledger record.
Every kind of ledger entry
The ledger is append-only: entries are never edited or deleted, only corrected by a new entry.
- Allocation (estimate)
- 50% of the month's qualifying revenue, estimated at month end.
- Allocation true-up
- The correction once ad networks and partners actually pay, 30 to 60 days later.
- Prize purchase
- What we paid for a prize, with the receipt.
- Sales tax
- Tax on a prize purchase.
- Shipping and packaging
- Getting a prize to its winner, including insurance.
- Publisher contribution
- Money we add on top, like the launch seed. Never paid back from the fund.
- Advance
- Money we front when milestones arrive before revenue does.
- Recoupment
- An advance paid back from a later allocation, shown line by line.
- Sponsor prize
- A prize a sponsor provides directly. Disclosed, but kept outside the fund.
What “qualifying revenue” means
Net revenue we actually receive from display ads, affiliate commissions, and sponsorships, after the ad network's share and before any of our own expenses. Ad revenue takes 30 to 60 days to finalize, so each month starts with an estimate and is corrected when the money arrives. Both numbers appear on the statement.
The Community Fund isn't a charity, and money in it isn't a donation. It's a promise about how we split our revenue, and this ledger is how we keep it.
